Interstate Power and Light Company invests in new emission reduction controls at Sutherland Generating Station

Combination of cost-effective emission reduction technologies to lower facility's NOx output

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa - November 5, 2008 - Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation (NYSE: LNT), continues construction on an approximate $30 million investment in emissions reduction technologies at the Sutherland Generating Station. The Sutherland Generating Station is a 143 megawatt coal-fired facility located in Marshalltown, Iowa. The power plant produces enough energy to power approximately 143,000 homes.

Construction began in August to install an Over Fire Air (OFA), Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) and Rich Reagent Injection (RRI) systems. IPL expects the technologies to remove more than 60 percent of the NOx emissions from the Sutherland Generating Station Unit 3.

The OFA, SNCR and RRI systems projects are expected to require a peak workforce of approximately 300 workers with a total number of labor hours of approximately 200,000.

IPL expects the NOx emissions reduction projects to be completed by the end of the year.

“We are proud to play a part in positioning our service area for a bright energy future,” adds Aller. “Our investments in emissions reduction technologies, combined with our pursuit of additional baseload and renewable energy generation and commitment to energy conservation provide a balanced approach for our state's economy and environment. We are also extremely appreciative of the strong partnership between our company and the community of Marshalltown.”
