Ports & Waterways

Iowa: Iowa is bordered on the east by the upper Mississippi River and on the west by the Missouri River. More than 170 million tons of freight is shipped each year via the Mississippi river. The Mississippi and Missouri rivers converge in St. Louis, Mo., to form the third longest river in the world. Both rivers are navigable to the Gulf of Mexico. Iowa currently has 69 manufacturing facilities, terminals and docks in Iowa that shipped and received tonnage in 1999. Iowa has 491 miles of navigable rivers.

Minnesota: Minnesota is served by two waterway systems, an inland river waterway and the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway. Minnesota benefits from waterway transportation because it is a low cost means of shipping bulk commodities over long distances. Shippers are also able to utilize this mode and save transportation costs when shipping freight that is not as time sensitive as some other freight commodities.

Wisconsin: Wisconsin's commercial ports offer state-of-the-art facilities that can handle machinery, liquid, dry bulk, steel, containers, and heavy lift cargo. Fourteen major commercial ports connect global markets to Wisconsin. The 1,050 miles of Wisconsin waterways, integral to the world's water transport system, provide ocean linkage via the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.

Railroads

Iowa: Iowa is served by 19 railroad companies, which operate 4,163 miles of track within Iowa. Three of these railroads are major national companies operating throughout much of the United States. These railroads operate 53 percent of Iowa's total route miles, including much of the Iowa grain-gathering network. The remaining 16 smaller railroads serving Iowa consist of four regional railroads operating in Iowa and nearby states, and 12 local railroads operating in Iowa.

Minnesota: A total of 26 railroads, including three private lines that do not provide commercial freight service, operate on 4,526 miles of rail line in Minnesota.

Wisconsin: Wisconsin has 12 freight railroads that operate on a system of over 3,600 route miles. Combined, they handled over 2.5 million cars and almost 150 million tons of freight in 2000.
